"For the Security & Protection of the Community": A Pennsylvania Constitution Town Hall
While 2026 marks the semiquincentennial of the Declaration of Independence, this year also marks the 250th anniversary of an important milestone in Pennsylvania history: the Commonwealth’s first state constitution, which was authorized in June 1776 during the Pennsylvania Provincial Conference held at Carpenters’ Hall. Adopted in September 1776, this document, which included a Bill of Rights and expanded voting rights, influenced other state constitutions in the Revolutionary period–and indeed the U.S. Constitution itself just a few years later. A bedrock of fundamental rights for Pennsylvanians, the current state constitution includes rights that go beyond those in the U.S. Constitution and affect the lives of everyone in the Commonwealth.
To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Pennsylvania Provincial Conference and the 1776 Pennsylvania Constitution, Carpenters’ Hall is hosting a series of programs and events throughout 2026 to explore this important milestone in Commonwealth history and engage Pennsylvanians in the contemporary relevance of our state constitution. This Town Hall will feature a panel discussion with experienced lawyers and legal scholars exploring the early history of our state constitution as well as issues such as public education, voting rights, the environment, reproductive rights and others that are within the jurisdiction of our current state constitution. Confirmed panelists to date are:
Drew Compton, McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC and former Commonwealth Court judge
Brent Landau, Executive Director, Public Interest Law Center
Donald Morritz, Of Counsel, Community Justice Project
Joanna McClinton, PA House Speaker
Partners for this Town Hall are the Dauphin County Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Public Interest Law Center, and PA Humanities.
Please click the event registration button below to RSVP for the Harrisburg Town Hall, which will be held on Wednesday, April 15th, 2026, from 5:30-7:30pm at the State Museum of Pennsylvania, located at 300 North St, Harrisburg, PA 17120. Members of the Dauphin County Bar Association should register here in order to qualify for CLE credits. This session will not be live-streamed or recorded, but others in this series will be recorded for future viewing.
Attendees at this Town Hall will be entered into a drawing, and one will win a pair of tickets to a FIFA World Cup game in Philadelphia in June, an overnight stay at the Study in University City, and a private tour of Carpenters' Hall. Winners must be present to win (prize package courtesy of the PA State Tourism Office and Visit Philadelphia).
This event is supported by America250PA and the Landenberger Family Foundation.

How to Raise a Citizen
Join us to hear from Dr. Lindsey Cormack to learn how to talk with young people (your own or others) about politics and government in our country. Dr. Cormack is an associate professor of Political Science and Director of the Diplomacy Lab at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. Her latest book, How to Raise a Citizen & Why it’s Up to You to Do It, aims to reinvigorate multi-generational political discussion and governmental know-how after examining the somewhat dire state of civic education in the United States.
Cormack earned her PhD in Government from New York University and is raising a daughter on the Upper East Side. She currently serves as the Secretary for Community Board 8 in Manhattan. In addition to being a published academic scholar, she also created and maintains the digital database of all official Congress-to-constituent e-newsletters in the DCinbox Project.

U.S. Immigration Courts at a Crisis Point: Webinar
Sponsored by Migration Policy Institute
Backlogs in the nation’s immigration courts have reached record levels in recent years, with nearly 4 million removals cases pending—adding new pressures to long-standing challenges that have overwhelmed the courts. With it now taking an average of four years for an asylum applicant to get a hearing, the delays are undermining the goals of both the U.S. asylum and immigration enforcement systems.
This discussion will draw on a new Migration Policy Institute policy brief that examines how the immigration courts have reached a point of crisis, with panelists focusing on how the courts have been shaped by the policies of the current administration and its predecessor.
The conversation will also touch upon the administrative and legislative reforms that are urgently needed to transform the system, key among them increased funding for the courts, commensurate with the historic spending on immigration enforcement included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
SPEAKERS:
Kathleen Bush-Joseph, Policy Analyst, MPI
Muzaffar Chishti, Senior Fellow, MPI
Chiqui Sanchez Kennedy, Executive Director, Galveston-Houston Immigrant Representation Project
Kyra S. Lilien, Former Immigration Judge, Concord Immigration Court, Executive Office for Immigration Review, U.S. Department of Justice
Doris Meissner, Senior Fellow and Director, U.S. Immigration Policy Program, MPI

Democracy in Our Hands (LWV US) - Building Coalitions to Amplify Action
Building coalitions means being reflective, resonant, and responsive to the needs of your community. League members are active members in their communities, they know them well and they are advocates for issues concerning elections, voter registration, voter guides, and candidates. As trusted messengers in their communities Leagues have institutional knowledge and the information that excels civic engagement.
To build upon the legacy of the League as the trusted resource of election information, Leagues would benefit from an event that underscores the importance of coalition-building with an emphasis on anchoring diverse lived experience and connecting with voters who might not have access to their local Leagues. It is by way of connecting with these voters that deep coalition is built across country of origin, or socio-economic status, or education level. The League is a lever for connecting the dots as championing voting rights for all in our democracy.
Join, Democracy Truth Project manager, Chelsey Cartwright, Founder and CEO of MOV Strategies, Brencia Berry, and Associate Professor of Political Science at Howard University, Dr. Marcus Board, for a conversation on what intentional coalition-building looks like. How do you build relationships with similar “fight for democracy” organizations that speak to inclusion, expanding access and opportunity, and make space for all of those looking for a seat at the table.
The conversation will span the scope of history around movement and liberation work in our democracy. From the Black Liberation movement to the fight for Indigenous sovereignty, and everything in between this conversation will be a hybrid of taking inventory of history-making movement spaces and the tools we need at our disposal to re-imagine and transform this work. What does transformational and meeting the moment coalition-work look like, join the conversation and explore. Also, we will plug in a creative and lively call to action so that Leaguers can continue the work of building coalition in their communities and lives across the country. Folding in activating networks of Delta Sigma Theta as part of the call to action is an important piece to prioritize.
